Nokia Exec says iPhone, Android Handsets No Longer Appeal To Youth [My Comment on this article]

I read an article on Tech Crunch[Nokia Exec: iPhone, Android Handsets No Longer Appeal To Youth] today and i left a comment that i felt i should share on my blog.

My comment

I dont see what is wrong with his statement. According to the numbers he is looking at there is a growing niche in the market for something different and they feel that windows phone is what everyone will soon turn to.

Also what is wrong with talking trash about your sompetitors even when your product is not yet the best, i clearly remeber the late Steve Jobs dong that a lot even when apple was not good enough to compete with windows.

My question to the authur of the article, do you think windows phone sales will not shoot up when microsofts project with windows 8 if finally complete? To the untrained eye it looks like Microsoft is loosing out in the mobile and desktop markets but if you have taken even a sencond to look at Microsoft you would notice that a lot of changes are taking place. Have you even considered the potential impact of windows 8 and what it would mean to Nokia?

I kind of understand why Mr. Niels Munksgaard would talk like that, its not due to arrogance and being blind but he has some insight that you do not have.

Connecting to a WiFi Network in Windows 7 [is really simple]

I have heard it being said a hundred times over that it is easier to connect to a WiFi network in Mac OS than in windows. I find that a little annoying since it not entirely accurate especially when you are talking about windows 7.

Of all the versions of windows, it is really simple to setup and to connect to WiFi networks in Windows 7. I would only talk about connecting to an existing WiFi network.

  • Go to the system tray found on your task-bar

  • Click on the network icon[circled by the yellow ring]

  • A popup menu appears and if your wireless card is switched on, a list of available networks within range would show up.

  • Click on the network you would like to connect to and click on connect. You can also double click on the desired network and it would connect.

  • If a password is required you would be prompted to type in the password

  • You’re Done!

Note: you would only get Internet access if the WiFi network you are connected to has Internet sharing enabled. Also the network i connected to in this example didn't have Internet access so the yellow warning triangle appears on the network bars

Today’s Bit of wisdom

                   “Don’t get too comfortable

I really don’t need to elaborate on this. If you want to stay on top getting too comfortable with your achievements is a sure way to spoil your goals of staying on top. If you get too comfortable you become lazy, then you become complacent and then failure will surely follow along with disgrace. As simple as that, trust me the last thing you want to do when you are on top is to get comfortable.
Take a look at some of the great business leaders like Steve Jobs, they never got comfortable with their achievements.

Docky (a fully functional dock for Linux)

For those of you who are funs of the Linux platform I am sure you know of the Gnome Classic desktop which is one of the most popular desktop environments for the Linux platform. The Gnome Classic desktop comes with so many features that I enjoy using and Docky is certainly one that I like.
Docky is simply a dock for the Gnome Classic desktop a Mac OS Dock equivalent for the Gnome Classic desktop.

Its level of customization lets you do almost anything with the dock
You could even chose a panel mode that mimics the windows 7 taskbar look with transparency enabled.

It also allows you to change it interacts with mouse gestures and the placement of windows.

http://wiki.go-docky.com

If you are using Ubuntu just go to the Ubuntu software centre search for Docky and click to install button it would ask for authentication and then your installation would proceed.

Steve Jobs passes away at the age of 56 (1955 - 2011)

I am not a fan of Apple or their founder Steve Jobs but the sadness I feel at this moment I really cant describe. Steve Jobs the co-founder of  apple and arguably one of the most influential people in the world of technology and innovation for the past two decades is no longer with us. He passed away on 5-Oct-2011 after a long battle with Cancer ...............................................................

Sorry, I had to pause for a minute i couldn't control myself.

We all knew that he was battling cancer ................ but nothing could prepare us for this.........

Honestly I am not in the right state of mind to continue writing and I would have to end this here. I would like it if all of you could join me in observing a moment of silence in honor of Steve Jobs.

Thanks Steve

Apple now ready to Launch the iPhone5 (what new possibilities would it bring)

What would the iPhone5 look like and what new possibilities
would it bring to mobile computing?

Exciting news for Apple lovers and the rest of the mobile industry. A lot of noise has been made about the device and everyone is waiting to see if it would set a new standard in the mobile computing world. I remember when Apple released the iPhone onto the market for the first time and the way it opened possibilities in the mobile computing world that had never been done before. All these opportunities were available in the mobile world but hadn’t been fully exploited up to this point, until Apple. Back then the only Smartphone was from Blackberry and then Apple came to redefine the Smartphone.

Fast forward to 2011 and we all can’t wait to see what happens next with this phone. Lets phase the facts Apple changed the meaning of mobile computing. They did not re-write the rules but instead they chose to reinterpret the rules and as a result opening a market that wasn’t been fully utilized.  A huge effect of the entry of Apples iPhone was Google Android operating system. Which we must be honest has been a runaway hit. Most people do not give Android that much credit and talk about the different manufacturers and a whole lot of unnecessary stuff.  If you should look at the different manufacturers of hardware then the iPhone has a larger market share,  but if you look at the operating system then Android is the leader. And it is for two reasons.

One, the Android operating system gives more choices to its users compared to the iOS with so many restrictions placed on it that are meant to make its usage easier.
Two, the Android OS has more and better features than the iOS .
I didn’t want to talk about price since we do have Android devises that are expensive, but if you want to include that then yes, Android devices give you more for less money.

I highlighted on the design aspects because it is evident that Apple in order not to fall out of the competition and to give the iOS a better user experience had to borrow some features from the Android OS. I wish I had all the time to go through most of them but here are a few.
  • Newsstand
  • Notification Centre
  • Location based reminders
  • Cloud Sync      ..................and the list goes on and on.

Clearly this big company known for its innovation is facing some stiff challenge from Google’s Android which is causing Apple to have to adapt to the demands of the market.

This to me, is the more reason why this iPhone 5 launch is really important to me. Is there anything new that Apple could bring to the table now that they are borrowing ideas from other mobile operating systems? Will they adopt these changes in a better way or have they lost their power of innovation. Maybe they will include multiple cameras or 3D cameras to the iPhone, honestly the expectations are so high for Apple but it seems like they might not live up to their reputation this time. We all can’t wait to see what would com out of Apple. So keep your fingers crossed they might just bring out something that you never ever expected.

Tablets Computers can only get better

I cant just stop talking about Amazon at the moment. It is really nice in my view to see tech companies doing their best to outdo Apple's i Pad
As a results consumers like myself are finding it easy to get tables computers at a good price. Apple can keep selling at $600 no problem with the rest of us we would just switch to androids which would still give us the browsing capability that we would want on a tablet and at the same time the ability to stay connected in a new way.

I really like this at the end of the day it is a win win for the consumers. The kind of innovation that have come out of these tablet wars have been healthy for consumers.
Apple is now coping some of the features found in android devices. To help their products serve their customers better.

Well we would see what happens in the future. I can accurately predict that it would be full of better battery life cheaper tablets and awesome software. I will leave you with this video i found on  YouTube

                                               Galaxy Tab

                                              Amazon Fire

                                                     i Pad

The future of tablets can only get better!!!

Trying out Microsoft Security Essentials 2 (Verdict)

If you haven’t read my first post on trying out Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) click here

The Simple User Interface of Microsoft Security Essentials

Now to my verdict about this security software.  MSE has a simple and easy to use interface to work with whatever it is that you plan to do with MSE. Like any antivirus you get updates for virus definitions (virus definitions enable your antivirus software to identify and deal with virus threats), virus scans, file monitoring. It can automatically scan downloads for you. It does a lot of what you should expect from any antivirus software.

For me personally the one thing that I like is its use of system resources. It conducts its work without slowing down your system. I personally think it’s good.

I will run some further test on it later on. I like it and I have switched fully to MSE but if I ever have a problem with it I won’t hesitate to let you know what I have found.

Tech Crunch video on windows 8 tablet is back

Just a quick one here Tech Crunch put up the video you can check out here

Tech Crunch Mess up with a Fly or Die review of Windows 8

Tech Crunch Logo

OK, i am surfing and I make my way to Tech Crunch to read a couple of articles on technology(just as you would expect). I found this article with a video of two guys (seems like the event was Disrupt) reviewing the windows 8 tablet. Currently windows 8 is a beta release and i find it interesting the kind of unkind comments being made about it.

Screen shot of the article

It is interesting that how the guy goes about mocking windows saying that it is not a tablet but it is a PC (whiles holding a device that is a tablet). He goes on to prove his point by switching from the Metro interface which is the default for windows 8 to the window 7 desktop interface and say it is counter intuitive.

Later on he confirms that the windows 7 desktop interface is a run as an emulation.

I just dont get their point.

Well after a lot of comments showing readers dislike of the review and lack of unbiased journalism Tech Crunch took the video of the article.

Trying out Microsoft Security Essentials

I happened to walk to a friends laptop today and i say him running Microsoft security essentials (MSE). for those of you who are not PC users and who do not know much about MSE, it is Microsoft's free antivirus software whiles Windows defender only handles spyware and as a result is not the most effective option.

Avast Antivirus Home Edition(screenshot from avast.com )

I have been using avast home edition which some free for sometime. It is not the best but if you happen to be a very careful person like me it is exactly what you need and i would say  do not be afraid to try out some of these solutions so long as you are careful.
Avast hasn't been bad although it hasn't been the best so i had no problem with the thought of trying out MSE

Microsoft Security Essentials

I will use it throughout the month of September and give you my verdict. I like the thought of using the same products from the operating system that i use. Hopefully it should use less memory and processing power than other antivirus solutions.

The New Interface for Blogger

I would have to be very honest about this but i am already loving this new interface.
Just look at it.

A look at my blogger interface and finally captions for photos

Finally blogger is doing more to give its users looks that match what WordPress has to offer.
And Finally Captions for photos.

GREAT STUFF!!!

Get and actively seek Knowledge

This message might sound like something that I have talked about before but I find it so important I feel like shouting it out anytime it dawns on me.

I have been in a very happy mood in recent times since I got back into my knowledge acquiring phase. Which is the reason for my sudden surge in productivity and the reason for recent activities on this blog

We live in a society where a majority of the youth spends most of their time getting entertained rather than getting informed or working on achieving something with their lives. Hours spent behind the TV to a focused mind is really a whole lot of waste. I have nothing wrong with getting entertained; my problem is when it is done in a manner that is random and not planned. It would be ok to get entertained if you had planned for it and ensured that it served as an outlet to get rid of stress.

My Point

What I want to say is this, If you want to do something really meaningful with your time you would have to start taking choices like reading books, listening to audio books and in general acquiring knowledge through studying.

Reading article from blogs like this on can be a good start.

Acquiring knowledge is one major step in moving from failure to success. Read books listen to audio books just do something that helps to get you to the next level.

Remember success is a result of what you do on a daily basis.

Today's Bit of Wisdom

" What time is it ?"
by me

Stop right there, its not really about looking at the time on your watch. Today's bit of wisdom is a question I ask myself from time to time. I see this question as something you do to put yourself back on track.

If you are someone who has a great ability to focus in life you would know how important it is to get the answer to this question right. Finding the right answer could be the difference between success and failure. You should be able to determine what you should be doing right now to enable you achieve your goals. Its easy to loose focus of what is really important in today's world with all sorts of information coming our way faster than we can manage.
A simple question like this can easily restore focus and balance to your day and your life.

Take a little time everyday to ask yourself "What time is it?".

Moody’s and Greece crisis

I have been following the developments in Greece with some interest to find out what is really going on with this whole European crisis. I must say it is a very sad thing to watch. It’s really sad to see a country going down because of its financial rating. Now, what I just want to talk about is the financial ratings that have seen Greece go down.
Disclaimer: I am not some great financial advisor nor do I have a qualification in the area of finances. I just feel something is wrong and I want o express myself. Thank you.
I must say, there is something funny about this whole issue of ratings agencies and the power they wield and that is why I want to talk about Moody’s. Over the past month Moody’s has gone about its business in a way that makes me feel that something should be done about the issue of rating financial investments especially when it comes to the security of countries
Rating agencies like Moody’s are there to help investors who do not have the resources to investigate into certain investment products to make informed choices based on the rating that are giving it my these agencies. Investors should be able to make good investment decisions by following the rating giving. Moody’s is part of the three biggest rating agencies and commands around a 40% market share in this market and wields a lot of power. This kind of power is even stronger in a market that is driven in a large part by speculations. The worth of companies could fall overnight if it ratings go down and vice versa. When a ratings agency like Moody’s lowers the ratings of an investment the market listens and pulls out of that investment driving that very investment to loose a lot of value.
Political leaders in Greece have made very wrong decisions in the past that have cost their country dearly and put them in debt that they are finding difficult to repay. For their current financial situations I would totally blame the politicians who messed up their economy but what Moody’s did to was unacceptable. I fully understand that they have to warn investors when investments are going sour but I believe they are being partial. Their decision to reduce the ratings of Greece has only succeeded in deepening the problems the Greece are facing in paying their debt. Why would I accuse them of being partial? Well we all know the global financial crisis that happened recently and which most of the world is still recovering from, well what was Moody’s doing when they knew very well that US government bonds were just junk but they seemed to have forgotten about their rating standards. When it came to Greece they realized that they had standards to follow.

They (Moody’s) recently announced that they were considering downgrading US government bonds I found that really funny that they would talk about CONSIDERING. If something is bad you don’t consider you just go ahead and down grade it. You can’t sit down and consider if it’s no good, just downgrade it. This whole issue of CONSIDERING bothers me and makes me doubt the credibility of Moody’s.
It is one thing downgrading a company and another thing downgrading government bonds. When Moody’s were making their decision on Greece they didn’t seem to care about the kind of impact it would have on their economy this is why I mentioned “the security of countries”. It is just unsafe for nations to be rated by organizations like Moody’s who are much more of arrogant than friendly. Their ratings could have given Greece a better fighting chance considering the fact that their current leaders had shown their commitment to make decisions to pay of their debts.
Personally I am happy that the European Union is planning on creating a rival ratings agency that would serve as an alternative to the American agencies like Moody’s. Their careless action that has only deepened the crisis in Greece really got the European Union angry and would help the financial industry as a whole. If Moody’s were that good at ratings they could have seen the financial crisis coming and warned investors about US government bonds. I think it is wiser and safer for all major regional blocks to have similar structures to protect them from companies like Moody’s. Moody’s have no moral right to do what they did.

Singer Amy Winehouse is dead.

Sad news today hearing all the horrible things going on in Norway and then news comes in that the singer Amy Winehouse is dead.

It didn't sound shocking giving that she was struggling with addiction to drugs and alcohol and to be honest it looked like her addictions were going to cause her to end like this. I found it really sad although I personally am not a fun of her works but rather that a really talented young lady should loose her life at such a young age. It is easy to blame her for messing up her carrier and the opportunities she had in life and her carrier but I think we should look deeper at the story and learn some lessons from it.

It is sad that our society could watch as she destroyed herself. It is true that she has herself to blame for her downward spiral but it is as a result of the society. There are millions like her who go unnoticed and die from such abuse or even worse get others to join in this form of self destruction. She is not the first and won’t be the last if society doesn’t play an active role in preventing youngsters from becoming drug addicts.

It’s sad to see someone slowly destroy themselves and those around them to drug addiction.

Today we lost someone who could have been a force for good but we just watched as she destroyed herself. Sad and sad indeed.

Getting back to blogging and tweeting

It’s been sometime since I did any bit of serious blogging. I would be honest with all of you and say it as it is, I have been really lazy the past month.

The good news is that I have realized my errors and made significant steps to blogging and tweeting much more often than I have done in recent weeks.

I have started posting videos on my YouTube channel so you can check it out from time to time to see what I have for you.

This time round I would keep you posted on things that are much more personal like the things I do on a daily basis (that was actually the original purpose of the blog).

So expect to here a lot more from me enjoy and your comments are always welcome.

Moody's

It really surprises me why any one would still listen to rating agencies like moody’s who thing they are in a moral position to decide what investment is good or bad.
They couldn’t even determine whether US bonds were safe for investors before the global recession but somehow they know that Greece, Portugal and Italy are not safe for investors.
I would later talk in detail what I think about company's like Moody’s
If you happen to have any comments about Moody's let me know in the comments section

My Productivity: Office Suite

Well one would be wondering why I am still talking about things that seem so simple and have nothing to do with productivity. Well if you’ve read from the beginning I said lets take things one step at a time we would get to some of the things you might expect to see

Now an office suite is a software package containing various software’s that have to do with and usually help with office work. A typical one would be Microsoft’s office. I am not being paid by any one to talk about Microsoft the fact is that I am writing this current post in Microsoft word.

Microsoft office suite is the most popular paid for office suite and it contains very useful programs like

Microsoft word – for text editing

Microsoft Excel – For editing Spreed sheets

Powerpoint –To create presentations

Publisher – To create Professional Publications

Outlook – For organizing Emails and personal Calendars

Access - a simple to use Database creation Software

Most of you who use Microsoft office might only find yourself using word and occasionally Excel but which ever one of these you chose to use they all help to better organize information.

For example I manage most of my financial information using an Excel Spreed sheet it makes things easier to manage and analyze it also has tools that enable you to automatically do certain calculations. And the graph features are really indispensible.

Outlook to me is one of the most important applications for any one who would like to organize his life better. Some might see it quite unnecessary to use but I would talk about all that you can do with Microsoft outlook later on.

I am not a professional in the publishing world but putting together a creative look to a simple news letter is better done in Publisher than in word.

I have gone on and on about some of the things these software’s help you to do in order to help you to realize that using these applications more and more in managing resources is a priceless thing. Most people wouldn’t even want to bother looking at some packages but it is worth spending time to try some of these applications out to see if they really help in organized your life.

Free alternatives

If you feel you don’t have the money to buy a Microsoft office product there are free open source office suites out there which would do pretty much the same work as the one’s you pay for. I would personally recommend Open office Suite. This contains alternatives to Microsoft office and is also available in almost all platforms (Mac, windows, Linux etc.). It works just fine and is compatible with Microsoft office file formats at least for power point, word and excel file formats I know it works pretty well. It doesn’t come with an alternative for outlook but Morzilla Thunderbird would do in addition to some add on’s you could get it to work well.

Most people underestimate the use of such applications but it is worth thinking about what you could do with them to make your work easier.

These are the list of free applications that directly match Microsoft products

Excel – Open Spread Sheet

Word- Open Writer

Power point – Open Presentation

Outlook – Thunder Bird with calendar Add-on

Having an office suite is very important and really essential to everyday use and productivity
